A.
THEME
The theme in The Last of The Mohicans
story is relationship with others. It is revealed that if we do good to people,
people will do the same. And also if we do bad to people, people will do the
bad to us. The example is the relationship between The Delawares and The
Mohicans. Although The Delawares are in different side with The Mohicans,
because of the good relationship that has been made by them in past time, they
don’t fight with each other but help each other when they are in difficult
situation.
B.
CHARACTER
There are many characters in this story
:

Uncas
He is the last member of Mohicans, and
the son of Chingachgook.
It is shown in chapter 1 page 8,
“...Chingachgook an his son, Uncas, were the last of the great Mohicans....”
·
Chingachgook
He is another the last member of
Mohicans who is the father of Uncas. It is shown in chapter 1 page 8,
“...Chingachgook an his son, Uncas, were the last of the great Mohicans....”
·
Hawkeye
He is a scout for the English that had
always lived in the woods with Uncas and Chingachgook. It is shown in chapter 1
page 7, “...a most unusual white men named Hawkeye. He was a scout for the
English...” and “....he had always lived in the woods...”

Cora & Alice
They are the Colonel Munro’s daughters.
Both girls are beautiful in different ways. It is shown in chapter 1 page 4,
“...both girls were beautiful, but in different ways. Cora. The older one, had
shining black hair and dark eyes. Alice had blond hair and blue eyes. They were
both as nice to be with as they were beautiful.”

Colonel Munro
Munro is the colonel who leads the army
in England side. He is also the father of Cora and Alice. It is shown in
chapter 1 page 4, “..Colonel Munro commanded the soldiers at Fort William
Henry, the largest of English forts. His young daughters, Cora and Alice, lived
with him...”.

Major Duncan Heyward
He is a soldier under Colonel Munro’s
command. He loves one of Munro’s daughter, Alice. It is shown in chapter 1 page
5, “...Major Duncan Heyward, a soldier under Colonel Munro’s command. Major
Heyward liked both girls -but he was secretly in love with Alice...”

Magua
He is an Indian Scout who is trusted by
Duncan. It is shown in chapter 1 page 5. But, after chapter 1, it is revealed
that Magua betrays him.

David Gamut
He is a singing teacher who end up
travelling with Duncan, Cora, and Alice.
“...The thin stranger smiled, “I am a
singing teacher,” he answered...” –Chapter 1 page 5.

Chief Tamenund
He is the chief of an indian tribe, The
Delaware. It is shown in chapter 11, page 70, “...old Chief Tamenund of the
Delawares was a...”. The Delaware is in a good relationship with The Mohicans.

PLOT
·
Exposition
:
It was 1757,
the third year of the French and Indian War in America. England and French were
fighting for possession of a country that was destined to have. Some indians
were helping the English, the others were helping the French.
·
Complication
:
Cora and Alice
were on their way back to Fort William Henry after visited their friends many
miles away. They were being escorted by Major Duncan Heyward, a soldier under
Colonel Munro’s command, and Heyward brought along his indian scout to show
them the way, his name is Magua.
·
Conflict
:
But, Magua makes
them lost. He betrays them. Apparently, he is a Huron and hates British so
much, especially with Colonel Munro. He takes aside with French. After the
authority of Fort William Henry has been moved to France, he kills english
people and kidnaps Cora.
·
Resolution
:
Uncas, Chingachgook,
Hawkeye, Heyward, and Colonel Munro try to save Cora by the help of Delawares.
They confront the evil of Magua and Huron Tribe. In the end, Cora was killed by
a Huron, Uncas was killed by Magua, and Magua was killed by Hawkeye. Finally,
the only one who would be the last Mohicans is Chingachgook. He is the father
of Uncas.

POINT OF VIEW
Point
of view in The Last of The Mohicans is third person omnicient (Mr/Mrs know it
all).
F.
ATMOSPHERE OR TONE
The author tells the story with verbose
style. In The Last of The Mohicans story, to tell the story about the last of
the mohicans he puts another story like the war that happens between the French
and England. It makes the whole story doesn’t tell about the mohicans directly.

SYMBOL
There are some symbols in the story :

It
symbolizes the death of indian culture by the arrival of european civilization

The
name of “Hawkeye” in the character of hawkeye
It symbolizes
a bravery. In the story hawkeye is brave, sharp in observation, strong, smart
and perceptive. He just looks like a hawk.

MORAL VALUE
·
Sometimes,
to get something good we need a good effort too.
·
When
we face a problem, we must have a good thinking in strategy
·
You
must have faith in your friends who always help you and care to you. Help them
if they have a problem.
