The Internet is The Most Significant Achievement of The 20th Century

Technology is something that is used to help people do their task. It always develop with many new functions that was not provided before. As long as the development of era, the technology also develops to adjust with it. There are many technologies that are made and developed to help people do their tasks more easily. Different technologies give many different benefits. The example of the most significant achievement of the 20th century technology is Internet.

The Internet was conceived in the 1960s as a tool to link university and government research centers via a nationwide network.¹ The facility where we can access internet has been provided almost in all technologies in this modern era. It makes us can get many informations easily. Internet is like something that knows all things that we do not know. Clearly, internet is a system that could make computers communicate with each other without the need for a traditional central system.²

What eventually grew out of internet is a low-cost technology that is swiftly and dramatically changing the world. It is also changing the business world because of its functions. It is very difficult to imagine how any business could operate during this time without the use of the internet. The development of the internet has significantly altered the day to day operations of a business; including how they communicate with each other and their audience.³ A business can present itself to customers with the use of a website or online advertisements.⁴ Many businesses now use the internet as a means of making customers aware of their current promotions.⁵

Another area which also effected by internet is politics. Internet provides many different platforms in many different countries. Online platforms that are popular in Russia have different modes of governance, free-speech policies, and functionality from the platforms popular in either America or China.⁶ These platforms, shaped by the peculiar political conditions in which they emerged, give rise to different citizens and different politics.⁷ The totality of platforms, behaviors, and users constituting “the Internet” in one country is not the same as “the Internet” in another country.⁸

Beside of the good impacts, internet also has bad impacts for us. One of them is the lack of face to face communication. It sounds quite ironic when the lack of face to face communication is mentioned as one of the negative impacts of Internet because the Internet is supposed to bring people closer.⁹ Research issued in the International Journal of Organizational Design and Engineering has stated that the face to face communication in teamwork helps people build mutual trust, creative and provide a higher result.¹⁰ But, to avoid this technology product because of the bad impacts is not a good idea, too. It will make us become a left behind person. Finally, the thing that we must do is we must use this technology product more carefully. We must be a selective person in defining the good and bad impacts of the Internet.
