Violence on Television
The most
influential thing in branching out the value system and behavior of people is
television. But, what bad thing is that television program is violent nowadays.
It is as written by American Academy of Child
& Adolescent Psychiatry.1 While it is true that there is
violence on television, each individual has his or her own idea about how much
is too much. According to Doctor Gail Gross from Huffingpost.com, violence on
television can impact young children and even adults in the way they think and
act.2 American
Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry states that there are
others impacts of TV violence on children, like they don’t afraid with what
violence is, thinking of violence as problems solving, and even try to do the
violence which has been watched by them on television.3 Fortunately,
we are all free to choose which TV program we want to watch. American Psychological
Association on PSYCHOLOGY : Science in Action website explains that some people can be influenced by it, but
some people even want to enjoy in watching it.4 Laws are not
necessary to help us decide.
It isn't
difficult to find out which programs are on TV at any given time. Most
newspapers publish a schedule of TV programs every day. Also, anyone who
watches TV regularly knows which programs she likes and which she doesn't like.
She knows what kinds of programs each different channel tends to have. Kyla Boyse, R.N on Michigan
Medicine : University of Medicine website says that TV
Parental Guidance rating system is used to shows which the good TV programs
are.5 Because of this, it's
easy for everyone to avoid violent programs if they want to.
Modern technology
has given us a tool for controlling the TV programs we see. Most TVs can be
programmed to block certain channels. Kyla Boyse, R.N on Michigan Medicine : University of Medicine website
propose to install and use a V-chip which can block the unwanted TV shows.6 Thus, parents have a way to protect their children from seeing shows
that are too violent. Adults can also use this technology to avoid seeing
programs that they don't want to see.
The best
thing about TV is that there is a variety of programs. There are news programs
for serious people. There are films and cartoons for people who want to be
entertained. Doctor Gail Gross
from huffingtonpost.com explains that one good thing parents can do is by
showing their children some part of TV which can inspire them like Discovery
Channel, History Channel, Biography, and Nova.7 The variety of TV programs need to be protected, even if that
means allowing some of them to show violence.
We each
have our own ideas about what is too violent and what isn't. American Academy of Child
& Adolescent Psychiatry notes that parents should observe what is being watched by their childrens
and even can watch it together.8 It would be difficult to make laws about violence on TV that would
satisfy everybody. It is better to let each
individual make his or her own choice about what to watch. As proposed by American Academy of
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, parents can also
narrowing the television spending time of children.9 One of the ways
to limit the television spending time which is pointed out by Kyla Boyse, R.N
on Michigan Medicine : University of Medicine website is creating some detailed
rules about the right and wrong time for children to watch TV. The wrong time
example is when they are eating, doing homework, or when they are alone at
home.10
